Sway in May

Our theme this month is Chill & Thrill!
“I got chills and they’re multiplying” I think it’s fair to say we all know the movie of those
famous words. So, grab yourself something to drink and let’s get straight into the thrill part.

Sockhop
For those of you who have been in the dance scene for the last 10 plus years you would have heard of ChromeFest. This festival at The Entrance Memorial Park is held every year on the fourth weekend of October and is a real crowd pleaser.
Blue Suede Shoes have been fortunate to work with ChromeFest for over 10 years along with my son’s dance troupe Sydney Swing Katz. We are happy to announce that we will be part of the 3 day festival once again this year.
We are kicking off the festival on Friday night 27 October with the annual Sockhop to be held at Gosford Hall 7pm-11pm . Yep, that’s right our very own venue. Tickets to this event are limited to 150. As most of you know this event is sold out within a few weeks. Pre-sale starts this Monday 1 May. Details are below.
Performing on the night is our very own local popular Steve Edmonds Mescalero band
featuring Don Hopkins on keyboard bringing some bopping boogie and blues to the mix.

Tickets $28 bank deposit available now.
Credit card online available from Tuesday. Please note there is an additional $1.50
processing fee. Get in early!!
Email or message for to book.

What you can learn in May The Shim Sham
All you Swing Lovers its Frankie Manning Month. For all your dancers – Frankie Manning is the King of Swing Dancing and considered to be one of the founders of Lindy Hop. In
honour of his birthday month and World Lindy Hop Day we will be running a Shim Sham class so everyone can participate at the next social. The Shim Sham class will be held as part of our Intermediate class on Thursday 11 May at 7.30pm. No partner required.
All students past and present are welcomed to take part and learn the Shim Sham or just join in for a refresher.

What’s Happening Gosford?
Let’s have an inside look into the second half of the year as we approach mid year.
The winter season is almost upon us and this means there will be an interruption to our Gosford classes from June. This pause is temporary while we are on holidays. From past years we have noticed that this is our most quiet period with lots of students jet-setting to the north to capture the sunshine or just travelling as a whole.
But don’t fret you may still continue to learn the basics via online classes so there is no
disruption to your continued learning. You may enrol by email.
During this period we will also have a break from our Socials with a return in the Spring months please see below for dates.

Don’t stop till you get enough
When we return in Spring we will be hitting the floor running with our Socials, Christmas Party and dance lessons. Grab a pen and mark your calendar with the following dates:-

A word from the floor
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our new students who have joined our family dance school. It is a real blessing to teach dance and bring joy and life into your lives. For me it is a passion and has been from a very young age and I hope your journey to date has been inspired. I really appreciate your support and am grateful to all who have supported our external events such as Aloha, Gosford Socials and theme classes.

Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas

We are unwinding for the year and Summer is here!

I would like to wish everyone a very safe and Happy Christmas.  I hope you all have time to unwind and spend time with family and get outdoors.  It’s the time of giving and your
presence is the best gift you can give and receive.

This year has been a BIG year for us with our holiday, two milestone birthdays the big 40 and the big 60 and Michael’s retirement. Furthermore, the return of most classes, festivals and dance venues.
Michael and I had planned our trip to Italy in 2020 and had to put it on hold for 2 years.  During which time we were busy behind the scenes planning our European citizenships and passports and purchase of our Italian property.  That has now all come to fruition.
When you are faced with an obstacle it just means you find another way around it.

CHROMEFEST SOCKHOP
Despite the wet weather this year it was great to see ChromeFest return.
The change of venue for the Sockhop was a blessing after discovering there was a 4×4
metre dance floor at the original venue (The Entrance Leagues Club.)  We are thankful to everyone who supported the event.
The date for ChromeFest next year is 27-29 October and the ChromeFest Sockhop will be held Friday 27 October next year.

CLOSING DATES GOSFORD, CONCORD, EMU PLAINS, CLARENDON
Gosford classes ended last Thursday with a Christmas Social and thank you to
everyone who contributed with the yummy sweets and savouries.

Concord end of year class will end on Wednesday 14 December and as always bring a plate to celebrate.

Emu Plains will end Monday 5 December at the School Hall and the last class will be held at the Clarendon Tavern on Thursday 15 December as the hall is unavailable on Monday 12 December.

Clarendon Tavern will end Thursday 15 December which will also be a combined social for Emu Plains & Clarendon students.

THE ALBERT PALAIS WRAP UP
I am very grateful to all of you who were a part of this wonderful occasion. The feedback has been great as always.  You are all too kind.  The reason I kept the 100th combined
birthday a surprise was so no one would bring gifts.  I also wanted to surprise Justin therefore I didn’t even tell Monica or the staff.  Your presence was the gift and our gift to you was the canapes and service.

The Aston Martini’s as always didn’t disappoint and the canoli tower was a hit!

I have little footage and photos of the night as I was playing the social butterfly around the floor but I’m pleased to have had the group photo taken.
It truly was a wonderful way to finish the year.

Gift Vouchers
If you are looking for last minute gifts we have Gift Vouchers available on our website.  These can be redeemed for classes or events.

2023
In 2023 we are looking to focus on small socials at alternate venues.  We will change it up from month to month with either a DJ or band playing every other month.  Most students like that community feel and it’s also a great place for new students to feel comfortable getting on the floor for the first time.

Unfortunately, Christmas in July has become a casualty over the last 3 years and not viable with the overheads of the room hire and bar staff.  The overheads are becoming a little challenging and I understand some find it difficult to cover the entry fees. We are looking into replacing the event with a smaller venue and rebranding it altogether to make it more feasible for everyone. More details in 2023.

They say April Showers brings May Flowers.  My ballet slipper orchids are on point

May is dedicated to Mothers Day and we wish all you mums, mums to be and fill in mums a very Special Mothers Day.

May is also Frankie Manning’s Birthday Anniversary and a true treasure to all Swing Lovers around the world.  Frankie would have been 108 years this year on 26 May.  What better way to celebrate this year at our Night at the Albert Palais showcasing that very era.

Classes
Class numbers are slowly coming back to life but we have definitely taken a hard hit with fewer beginner enrolments than previous years which have resulted in some venue
closures.  We do apologise for these closures but it was a necessary evil.
We also apologise for some of our cancelled courses due to poor enrolments.
We are extremely thankful to our intermediate classes for their loyalty and attendance it is very much appreciated and doesn’t go unnoticed and we do hope our new students who have joined us are enjoying their journey.

Quarterly News Update

Welcome Welcome Welcome

It has been a couple of months since I have blogged.
Firstly I would like to welcome all new students and hope you are enjoying the experience.
Summer has gone and Autumn is now upon us and we can definitely begin to feel the cool crisp air in the early morning and evenings.

There has been so much in the news recently and close to home I know it’s been tough for those in the flood regions. It hasn’t been an easy 2 years for so many with all the world events but I would like to say that this too will pass and I know that for those who have been effected by the devastation of the floods it is challenging to think ahead.

Dance Classes are slowly returning to some sort of normality. We are finding numbers are still not as confident as pre 2020. Here’s hoping the confidence will return soon especially now that socials and festivals are back.
Private Lessons Gosford – I have 1 spot available for regular privates.
Please email me for dates and times.

Reminder
Less than 3 weeks away our BSS Birthday is approaching.  We are so looking forward to The Lemon Squeezing Daddies with Pearl and catching up and seeing you all, hopefully there is time to dance between chit chats.
We do have 12 tickets which were returned and are available if you did miss out.
Please email or text me for details.

BSS Dates for Diaries

New Courses Concord Wednesday 30 March

What’s New

The exciting news this month is that the Albert Palais in Leichhardt is now refurbished and available for events. I know some of our students danced in this stunning dance hall back in the day. This venue was built in 1934 and in its heyday boasted 3 stages and hosted countless bands and events. The venue holds 200 plus with ample space.
We would like to bring back the glory of this beautiful elegant vintage venue in an upcoming event. We are also asking and would appreciate feedback if there is interest for a formal event at before we go any further with plans.
The band we have in mind for this event is The Aston Martinis with their new line up. Dates to be announced hopefully at our BSS Birthday Party on Saturday 9 April provided everything aligns and we have the support.

Festivals

The Festivals are increasing month by month.
We have been asked to host the Chromefest evening events this year on Friday and Saturday. More details will be posted soon and we will advise when we open the pre ticket sales. Once again pre ticket sales will be available at the BSS Birthday Party.
Below are some dates of the most popular larger Festivals. Please do check if there are any updates or date changes as we have seen with the Wintersun event.

12 Days of Christmas

Jingle Bells Jingle Bells Jingle all the way to Christmas Day
I don’t know about you but I’m super excited for Christmas and the summer season ahead!
I love this time of year and the season of giving.  I don’t believe “giving” means lavish gifts and shopping till you’re broke.  Giving your time, being present, listening, making your gifts, making time and spending time with your loved ones is what I love most.
We have missed all our beautiful students and supporters and look forward to the start of 2022.

Our 30th Birthday

As you may now know our 30th Birthday event has been moved to Emu Plains on Saturday 8th January.  We are happy to still have the Lemon Squeezin Daddies performing at this event and we really looking forward to celebrating the New Year as well as our belated Birthday. Please be reminded this event is a sold out event.

Here is something fun you can do to fill in the days of boredom leading to Christmas.
Make a list Naughty on one side and Nice on the other.
List under each heading when you have been naughty or nice and give yourself a point  for nice and subtract a point for naughty.  Total up and if you’re in the positive reward yourself with a gift if you are in the negative give away a gift.

Midyear slump?

Have you hit the midyear slump?
Given the recent lockdown restrictions throughout Greater Sydney over the last 6 weeks I just want to reach out and remind everyone we will return once restrictions have eased.

In the meantime, please be kind to one another.  Everyone has a different opinion and rightly so.  We do encourage you to leave the politics to the politicians and respect each and everyone’s privacy. We are all experiencing different struggles.  Some have been
impacted either by health or financially and this takes a lot of mental strength to keep
resilient.  During these times please be considerate and supportive of one another as there is enough division amongst the people caused by external factors.

My wish for you all is to get EXCITED again!

I quite often get asked – How do I remain positive during this Pause Period?
Here are my tips not necessarily in this order.

3 years with no TV …best decision I have ever made
Turn off all negative social media (have a social media detox once a week)
Read books
Look ahead and Plan for when we get out of lockdown
Stay in touch with family and friends
Look for the good and look at the glass half full
Exercise daily even if it’s just a walk in the sunshine
Be grateful for the time we have been given to do those things we keep putting off
Set new goals

Try something new

My thoughts
We can all agree that we all miss our dance family and friends as well as the dancing.
This last 18 months have been quite the challenge especially for those in the south west and western areas of Sydney this time round.  Lockdown isn’t fun but we need to stay
focused and be resilient.  This too will pass and it won’t be long before we can all laugh
together again.

I want to keep you all motivated and inspired that there will be brighter days ahead and things may get worse before they get better but it’s just a bump in the road.

Now, Let’s do this short and sweet update.

30th Birthday Event
Our 30th Birthday Xmas in July has been postponed and now will move to our end of year Christmas Party.
We cannot give you a date as yet or venue until restrictions ease for dancing.  We still have Lemon Squeezin Daddies performing for this event.
Anyone wishing not to hold on to their ticket please email me for a refund.

Classes
Classes may look different when we get back as I would expect the 4sqm rule to come into effect first before returning to 2the sqm rule.  I would envisage private lessons coming into effect first.
Realistically my expectations for a start this year will be highly unlikely.

It’s our Birthday
5th August marks our 30th Birthday and what a ride it’s been.  We have had so many
wonderful memories and achievements.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you have supported us throughout those years and especially through these last 2
extraordinary years.

Chromefest
There has been no further updates for this event.  We will keep you posted.  In the
meantime there are no confirmation or ticket sales for any night events.
UPDATE 17 AUGUST
Chromefest has been cancelled.  It will now be run virtually.

Trivia
Did you know?
Soaking your feet in apple cider vinegar for 30 minutes soothes sore feet and gets rid of odour.  It also heals dry skin, cracked heals and toenail fungus.  1 part apple cider vinegar to 4 parts water.

Words of Wisdom
